Monagas is like an open air museum for its historic medieval architecture, is located on the right bank of the River Guadiana, on top of a hill in the region of Alentejo.
Monagas is ideal to know during a getaway weekend in the Alentejo, protected lives behind the walls and a small population, their houses are dressed in white and narrow, cobbled streets and tranquility wrapped in history, to walk by them is rewarding as a moment of leisure and relaxation, away from urban noise of big cities.
Reguengos de Monagas is considered one of the oldest Portuguese populations south of the river Tagus, in prehistoric times had been settled, case in point are the remains of megalithic monuments found in their surroundings. Also, at the foot of the hill on which stands the medieval village have been found pre-Roman tombs carved into stone.
During a visit to this historic Portuguese town, we appreciate the scenery that surrounds it, walk it and discover its religious temples, the Castle, the Tower of Ménage its medieval atmosphere.
In the surrounding archaeological remains with dolmens, memoirs and cromlechs that were raised by the pre-historic man.
